Amavasya (new moon) is the day for pitru tarpanam; the amavasyas of Ashwayuja (Deepavali), Bhadrapada (Mahalaya) and Shravana (Polala) are festivals in their own right. The times are computed with the NASA/JPL DE440s ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa; the day is fixed by the tithi at local sunrise (the second day when the tithi covers two sunrises), so cities west of India can keep it a day earlier. The table gives the tithi in IST and in the four US time zones, with the day each city keeps.
