How durmuhurtham and varjyam are computed
Durmuhurtham is a fixed muhurta of the day that is avoided for auspicious work. The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into 15 muhurtas, and a weekday table says which of them are durmuhurtham: the 14th on Sunday, the 9th and 12th on Monday, the 4th on Tuesday (plus the 7th muhurta of Tuesday night in some almanacs, shown here), the 8th on Wednesday, the 6th and 12th on Thursday, the 4th and 9th on Friday and the 1st and 2nd on Saturday. Varjyam (thyajyam) depends on the nakshatra: each nakshatra has a fixed starting point counted in ghatis (sixtieths) of the nakshatra's own length, and varjyam lasts four of those ghatis, about 1½ hours; it is avoided for starting anything important. Amrita kalam is the auspicious window of the same length in each nakshatra, and Abhijit muhurtam, the 8th of the 15 day muhurtas around local noon, is the daily auspicious muhurta. Times here are for this city's visible sunrise and sunset and the nakshatra times from the NASA/JPL ephemeris, and they agree with telugucalendar.org within two minutes in our checks.
