Horas 1–12 run from sunrise to sunset, 13–24 from sunset to the next sunrise. Shubha horas are marked green.

How horas are computed

A hora is one twelfth of the day or of the night. The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into 12 equal horas and the time from sunset to the next sunrise into another 12, so a day hora is longer than 60 minutes in summer and shorter in winter, and the length changes with the city's latitude. The first hora after sunrise belongs to the lord of the weekday – the Sun on Sunday, the Moon on Monday, Mars (Kuja) on Tuesday, Mercury (Budha) on Wednesday, Jupiter (Guru) on Thursday, Venus (Shukra) on Friday and Saturn (Shani) on Saturday – and each following hora goes to the next planet in the order Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. After 24 horas the sequence reaches the lord of the next weekday, which is how the weekdays got their order. By tradition the horas of Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon are shubha (good for starting work, travel, purchases and learning) and those of the Sun, Mars and Saturn are krura. Sunrise and sunset here are the visible sunrise and sunset for the city, computed from the NASA/JPL ephemeris, the same times as the city's daily panchangam.
