Makara Sankranti in 2026 falls on Wednesday 14 January 2026 in the Telugu states (Hyderabad, IST).

Makara Sankranti is the day the Sun enters sidereal Makara (Capricorn) and Uttarayana begins: the biggest harvest festival of the Telugu states, the middle day of the four-day Sankranti with Bhogi before it and Kanuma and Mukkanuma after. Homes are decorated with rangavalli and gobbemmalu, ariselu and other sweets are made, kites are flown and married daughters return to the parental home. It is a solar festival, so its date shifts only slowly (14 or 15 January), but when the ingress falls after sunset in India the festival moves to the next day while cities in the Americas keep the earlier date.
