Tarabalam (strength of the star) and chandrabalam (strength of the Moon) are the two personal checks a Telugu panchangam applies before choosing a time for travel, a purchase, a ceremony or any new start. Tarabalam counts the nakshatras from your birth nakshatra (janma nakshatra = 1) to the nakshatra of the day and reduces the count by nine: 1 Janma, 2 Sampat, 3 Vipat, 4 Kshema, 5 Pratyak, 6 Sadhana, 7 Naidhana, 8 Mitra, 9 Parama Mitra. Sampat, Kshema, Sadhana, Mitra and Parama Mitra (2, 4, 6, 8, 9) are favourable, Vipat, Pratyak and Naidhana (3, 5, 7) are not, and the Janma tara is avoided for new work. Chandrabalam counts the rasis from your birth rasi (Moon sign) to the rasi the Moon is in today: the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are favourable, the 4th and 12th are not, and the 8th, ashtama chandra, is the position most strictly avoided.
