Nakshatra and Rasi finder by date of birth

Enter the date, time and place of birth to find the janma nakshatra with its pada, the rasi (Moon sign) and the lagna, together with the tithi, yoga, karana and weekday of birth. The Moon's position is computed for the exact minute from the NASA/JPL DE440s ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same as this site's daily panchangam, so the nakshatra here matches the nakshatra end times printed on the day's page. The time zone of the birth place is applied as it was on that date, including daylight saving and India's war-time clock of 1942–45. The weekday follows the Hindu day, which begins at sunrise: a birth at 3 AM on a Sunday belongs to Saturday in the panchangam. If the birth time is near a nakshatra change, a few minutes' error in the recorded time can change the nakshatra; check the change time on the day's page.

FAQ

How do I find my nakshatra from my date of birth?

Enter the date, the time and the place of birth. The nakshatra is the 13°20′ segment of the sidereal zodiac the Moon was in at that minute; the pada is the quarter of it.

Is the rasi the same as the Western sun sign?

No. The Telugu rasi is the Moon's sidereal sign at birth, not the Sun's tropical sign.

Why does the birth time matter?

The Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day and through a pada in about six hours, and the lagna changes every two hours, so an unknown time can give the wrong pada or lagna.

What if I don't know the birth time?

Use 12:00. If the Moon stays in one nakshatra all day the result is still right; the page of that day shows when the nakshatra changed.
