Sources and how the letters were chosen
How the letters were chosen: six published versions of the table were transcribed and compared, ignoring vowel length (the verses quoted in Appakaviyamu count five vowels – a, i, u, e, o – and treat short and long as one, so చూ and చు are the same letter). All six give the same letter for 76 of the 108 padas; the three Telugu sources agree with each other on 88. The letter shown is the one at least two of the three Telugu sources give, in its most common spelling; where all three Telugu sources differ (1 pada), all three are shown. Every pada where a source gives a different letter is listed under 'Where the sources differ'.

How the nakshatra and pada are computed
Each nakshatra is 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac and each pada 3°20′; the birth nakshatra and pada are where the Moon was at the minute of birth. The tool uses the same engine as this site's panchangam and nakshatra finder (NASA/JPL DE440s ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa); for 50 test births from 1962 to 2031 in India, the USA, the UK, the Gulf, Singapore and Australia it gives the same nakshatra, pada and rasi as prokerala.com (50 of 50).
FAQ
What is namakshara (nama nakshatram)?
Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and tradition gives each pada a syllable – 108 in all, from 'Chu' for the first pada of Ashwini to 'Chi' for the last pada of Revati. A child's name is often chosen to begin with the syllable of the birth pada, and the same table is read backwards to find the nakshatra of a name (nama nakshatram).
How do I find the letter for my baby?
Enter the date, time and place of birth above. The tool computes the Moon's sidereal position for that minute (Lahiri ayanamsa), gives the nakshatra, pada and rasi and the syllable of that pada. For a birth today, the 'born today' page lists every pada period of the day.
Does the vowel have to match exactly?
The verses quoted in Appakaviyamu count five vowels – a, i, u, e, o – and treat short and long vowels as the same, so a name beginning with 'Chu' or 'Choo' fits the first pada of Ashwini. Many families also accept any vowel with the pada's consonant; ask your family priest.
What if the name begins with a conjunct letter such as Sri or Kri?
The verse quoted in Appakaviyamu from the Brahma Yamala says that when a name begins with a conjunct, its first consonant is taken (Sri -> Sha, Kri -> Ka); the same text keeps the 'ra' of a conjunct for some uses, so practice varies.
Why do lists differ for Shravana and Uttarabhadra?
Telugu almanac tables give Shravana Ju, Je, Jo, Kha; most Devanagari tables give Khi, Khu, Khe, Kho. The Kalajnakalpa verses in Appakaviyamu give Khi–Kho to Shravana and Ju, Je, Jo, Kha to Abhijit, the 28th nakshatra that 27-nakshatra tables merge into Shravana. For Uttarabhadra the Telugu sources give Sha for the second pada where Devanagari tables give Tha. All differences are listed on this page.
Does this page suggest names or predict anything?
No. It gives the traditional syllables and the astronomy (nakshatra, pada, rasi) only – no names, meanings or predictions.
