Marriage matching – ashtakoota guna milan (36 points)
Enter the date, time and place of birth of the bride and the groom – or, if you know them, just the birth nakshatra and pada. The tool counts the 36 points of ashtakoota matching (guna milan), the system used across North and South India and in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: varna (1), vashya (2), tara (3), yoni (4), graha maitri (5), gana (6), bhakoot (7) and nadi (8), and shows each koota with the bride's and the groom's side. Every table comes from the printed charts of Muhurta Chintamani (vivaha prakarana) and Nemichandra Shastri's Bharatiya Jyotish; where the two differ we show the other value as well, and the method page lists every table and every choice. The Moon's position is computed with the same NASA/JPL DE440s ephemeris and Lahiri ayanamsa as this site's panchangam. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere: the calculation runs in your browser.
Example: bride Rohini pada 2, groom Hasta pada 3
| Bride | by nakshatra Rohini – pada 2, Vrishabha |
|---|---|
| Groom | by nakshatra Hasta – pada 3, Kanya |
Guna milan total: 25½ / 36
At or above 18 of 36, the minimum that Muhurta Chintamani and Bharatiya Jyotish give for a marriage match; a higher total is better. Read the nadi and bhakoot notes too.
| Koota | Bride | Groom | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | Vaishya | Vaishya | 1 / 1 |
| Vashya | Chatushpada (quadruped) | Dvipada (human) | ½ / 2 |
| Tara (Dina) | 1 – Janma | 1 – Janma | 3 / 3 |
| Yoni | Serpent | Buffalo | 2 / 4 |
| Graha maitri | Venus | Mercury | 5 / 5 |
| Gana | Manushya | Deva | 6 / 6 |
| Bhakoot (Rasi) | Vrishabha | Kanya | 0 / 7 |
| Nadi | Antya (Kapha) | Adi (Vata) | 8 / 8 |
Notes from the texts
- The rasis are 5/9 from each other (0 of 7 bhakoot points), but the rasi lords are the same planet or mutual friends and there is no nadi dosha: by Muhurta Chintamani v. 32 the marriage is then auspicious.
This is the 36-point ashtakoota count from the Moon's nakshatra and rasi only. B. V. Raman's Muhurtha stresses that the full horoscopes (longevity, the 7th and 8th houses) are to be compared first; this tool does not do that, and it adds no predictions.

FAQ
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Muhurta Chintamani and Bharatiya Jyotish give 18 of 36 as the minimum; a higher total is better. Bharatiya Jyotish adds that the nadi and bhakoot points must be present.
What is nadi dosha?
If the bride's and groom's birth stars are in the same of the three nadis (Adi, Madhya, Antya), nadi gets 0 of 8 points. Muhurta Chintamani says there is no nadi dosha when the rasi is the same but the nakshatras differ, or the nakshatra is the same but in different rasis.
What if the birth time is not known?
Choose 'I know the nakshatra' and select the birth star and pada. Without the pada, a nakshatra that spans two rasis (Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, Purva Bhadrapada) can give a different rasi and a different score.
Is this the South Indian 10 porutham system?
No. This is the 36-point ashtakoota system. The South Indian rajju, vedha, mahendra and stree deergha checks are not part of it, and kuja (Mangal) dosha is not computed.
