In brief

Five verses, one for each syllable of 'na-maḥ-śi-vā-ya'. Each verse starts with its syllable and describes Shiva – wearing the king of serpents as a garland, worshipped with Mandakini water and sandal, the blue-throated lord with the bull banner, worshipped by Vasishtha, Agastya and Gautama, holding the Pinaka – and ends 'tasmai …kārāya namaḥ śivāya'. A closing verse says that reading it near Shiva leads to Shiva's world.
